In Greek mythology Nike was the daughter of Pallas and Styx. She lived on Mount Olympus and was a close companion of Zeus. Nike, the goddess of strength, speed, and victory would fly around battlefields to reward the victorious warriors with glory and fame. Nike's counterpart in Roman mythology is Victoria who was often honored by triumphant Roman generals returning from war.
A 10.5' high gilded bronze sculpture of Nike, the Winged Goddess of Victory, is a major sculptural component of the General Sherman Memorial. A freestanding sculpture of Nike is depicted walking with her left foot in front of her right. She is wearing a long robe, sandals, and a wreath of laurel, representing victory, in her hair. Her right arm is outstretched upward at a 45 degree angle and she is holding a large palm frond, representing peace, in her left hand.
The monument was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and A. Phimister Proctor. Charles Follen McKim was the architect. It was dedicated at the south east corner of Central Park on May 30, 1903.
