In the late 1960s, the island authorities of Tenerife said they needed a new airport at a new location as the existing airport (Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte) did not meet technical requirements due to adverse weather conditions. The new airport was build specially for holiday traffic, 20 minutes from the resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. The Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur Reina Sofía was inaugurated on 6 November 1978, by Queen Sofía of Spain, to whom the airport is dedicated.
The airport connects Tenerife with the Spanish mainland, the other Canary Islands and almost all European countries. In 2014 almost 9.2 million passengers used Tenerife-South Airport, making it the country's 6th largest and busiest airport.
