The Mississipppi Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary was created in 1959, evolving to become the National Wildlife Area (NWA) in 1971. The NWA covers 264 hectares surrounding the bay where the Mississippi River enters the lake. Thanks to that protection status, this is one of the few areas on the lake that remains a natural area.
Access is permitted in only this one area along Drummond Concession Road 9A. The posted co-ordinates refer to a parking and picnic area. Permitted activities (only in this designated area) include wildlife viewing on the designated trail, picnicking, hiking, skiing and snowshoeing. However, on one particular winter-time visit, I found the parking area buried in deep snow and there was no safe spot for the car to leave the single-lane road.
Personal watercraft, sport fishing and the aforementioned activities are not permitted from September 15th to December 15th when migratory bird protection is most significant. Other species protection includes the Monarch Butterfly, Bull Frog, Ring-necked Duck, Least Bittern and Butternut Tree.
