The bronze statue shows a young woman shouting out loud as she sells fish. She has a basket on her head with octopus in it, the tentacles over the side of the basket. In her hand she has a bucket containing fish.

Although the title of the piece is Mujer Pescadora (Fisher woman) perhaps it should more accurately be named Ganochera. The woman would not actually have caught the fish but would carry it live and sell it or barter it as she walked around the town.

In the Canary Islands the word Gangocha means to barter and in an occupation reserved for women, Gangocheras would barter or sell their produce. In this case it is fish, but women would also descend from farms in the hills with baskets of produce.

They each would have their own calls to out compete each other as they wandered around town. link

The statue depicts her barefoot, in traditional dress with a basket on her head, and her mouth open as she shouts out advertising her wares. She is standing on the ground walking away from the port heading into town.

It was sculpted in 2008 by Julio Nieto for the Lions Club of Puerto de la Cruz.
Sector of the workforce: Fisher woman
