Project Manager - HANK MEYERS
Design Engineer - PARSON BRINCKERHOFF QUADE & DOUGLAS, INC.

THIS HISTORIC TIMBER BRIDGE IS THE LAST REMAINING HOWE TRUSS BRIDGE ON
THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM. IT IS INCLUDED IN THE CALTRANS PUBLICATION
"HISTORIC HIGHWAY BRIDGES OF CALIFORNIA". SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD
BUILT THIS BRIDGE OVER ITS TRACKS IN 1918, WHERE THE COUNTY'S FIRST
WAGON BRIDGE WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1849. THIS WIDELY USED DESIGN,
PATENTED BY WILLIAM HOWE IN 1810, COMBINES DIAGONAL TRUSS BEAMS AND
VERTICAL IRON RODS. THE COMPLETE RECONSTRUCTION HERE BY THE CITY OF
SANTA CRUZ PRESERVES THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE ORIGINAL BRIDGE AND
INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL HOWE TRUSS ACROSS THE CENTER SPAN. THIS
RENOVATED BRIDGE WAS REDEDICATED AT A CEREMONY ON OCTOBER 31, 2000."
