"Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Tree was planted on 31st December 1897. A metal seat was erected around it in 1932 and cost £8.19.6. This gradually fell into disrepair and was replaced in time for the 1977 celebrations. It was donated and constructed by BJK Ltd. of Hathern.
There is a story that the tree was originally an Oak, and soon after it had been planted it perished. This was because some men who had been thrown out of the Anchor Inn urinated on it. Another oak sapling could not be found, so a horse chestnut was planted its place. "
