This one room schoolhouse was originally located south of town in the Mid-Prairie District. The sign outside explains its name:
Summit School (“Straw College”), built around 1850 was moved to the Village in 1972. Students who attended say their school was nicknamed “Straw College” because, during the winter, straw was stuffed behind the wainscoating for warmth. Restored in 1973 by Kalona Optimist, and Idris and Alpha Clubs.
