A bog is a wetland which gradually accumulates peat, which is composed of organic material of plant origin. In this environment very low in oxygen, the decomposition is not possible and the plants gradually become mineralized forming a deposit of organic matter or undecomposed: the peat.
This fossil plant rock contains at least 20% carbon. The thickness of peat ups to several meters. This unique environment for the delicate balance is home to many animal and plant species specific.
Peat was used as fuel throughout the world. Cut into bricks, it replaces the wood logs. Bog of Verrerie has never been exploited on a large scale for this purpose.
