As stated in the Ginormous Everyday Objects entry, I believe that this 'axe' is about 7 m long, and is placed about 5 m above the ground, to the south of the Kew Tourist Information Centre.
I haven't seen anybody purposefully standing under the axe.
You are welcome to take such a photo if you wish.
This is just a short distance off the Pacific Highway, but it would need to be planned for if visiting. From the south turn off about a kilometre before Kew onto the Nancy Bird Walton Drive. If heading south (to Newcastle, Sydney, Taree, etc) turn off at the Laurieton and Kew exit, and then go around the round-about, over the Highway, turn left at the next round-about outside the hotel, and the Big Axe is almost in sight, about 200 m down the hill, on the right.
Several places in Kew sell the 'iconic' car sticker: FAR KEW (tho it doesn't have the axe shown on it).
