The "smoke" coming from the building is coincidental clouds on the day the picture was taken but does add to the effect of the building. The building was designed by architect Gyo Obata of the firm Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum (HOK). The shape of the building's unique roof is known mathematically as a hyperboloid of one sheet.
