From the National Register Nomination form: The William Ernest Lown Hone, built in 1893, is one of the best
examples of the late Queen Anne style of architecture in Lawrence
County. Because of its period appearance and craftsmanship, it is
one of the more significant homes in Spearfish. The Lown family
who lived in this home for a long time was involved in the mercantile
business.
William Ernest Lown, and his brother, Charles, owned one of the
best general stores in the Black Hills. The storg is one block northeast
of the home. They built in this location because the railroad
tracks were just behind the store. The Lown family is significant to
the commercial history of Spearfish and Lawrence County. The reflection
of William Lown's success is seen through his attractive home.
The house appears to be in excellent condition and continues to serve as a private residence.
