The State Capitol Building in Hartford has several sculptures honoring individuals important in Connecticut's history. The marble statue of General David Wooster is in a niche on second elevation of the west side of the building. The 6' high by 2.5' by 2' statue of was created by Hermon A. MacNeil and was installed in 1924.
The marble statue of General David Wooster, the third on the left of four figures, is standing in a Gothic style marble niche. He is wearing his military uniform including a waistcoat, high collared jacket, long coat, cape and knee high boots. He holds a sword vertically by the hilt in his right hand and his tri-cornered hat cradled in the crook of his left arm. The marble plinth he is standing on is inscribed: WOOSTER
David Wooster was born in Stratford, CT on March 13, 1711. He graduated Yale College in 1738. He served in the French and Indian War and took part in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, NY in 1759.
During the Revolution War Wooster held the rank of major general in command of Connecticut militia companies sent to defend New York City. Later participated in the 1775 invasion of Quebec, Canada and was given military command of Montreal. He returned to Connecticut where he commanded the provincial militia in charge of the defense of the state. On May 2, 1777 he died of wounds sustained during the Battle of Ridgefield, CT.
