EN: Höllhooge (Hell's Hook) is a rock formation on the Rhine east of the center of Rheinfelden (Baden). The rock prodrudes into the river and confines its bed, the river width decreases from 250 to 175 meters; thus rapids accur, that were a danger to the rafters and bargees when the Rhine was the main transport route for goods. This strait was notorious even in Roman times and known as "infima Rapida".

The rock formation was created in the post-glacial period, as the river dug its way through the glacial gravel and molasse conglomerate until the older and harder limestone was bared.

DE: Höllhooge (Hölllhaken) ist eine Felsformation am Rheinufer östlich des Stadtzentrums von Rheinfelden (Baden). Der Felsen ragt in den Fluss hinein und engt seinen Lauf ein, die Flussbreite nimmt von 250 auf 175 Meter ab; dadurch entstehen Stromschnellen, die eine Gefahr für die Flösser und Schiffer waren, als der Rhein noch der Hauptverkehrsweg für Güter war. Diese Enge war schon in römischer Zeit als "infima rapida" berüchtigt.

Die Felsformation entstand in der Nacheiszeit, als der Fluss seinen Weg durch den eiszeitlichen Schotter und die Nagelfluh-Felsen grub, bis der ältere und härtere Muschelkalk freigelegt wurde.
