As part of the original SkyTrain line running from Vancouver to New Westminster Nanaimo Station opened on December 11, 1985. As of 2011 it averaged 13,148 passengers per day.

Because of the topography the platform design is interesting. The west half of the platforms are above street level, while the east half of the platforms are at ground level. Because of this hill Nanaimo Station has a great view of Downtown Vancouver when looking west from the platform.
