Corps of Discovery II – Camp Fortunate, MT, is a four-inch Lewis and Clark commemorative disk located at the Camp Fortunate Overlook in the Camp Fortunate Recreation Area, on the northwest side of Clark Canyon Reservoir, Beaverhead County, MT. The disk is mounted flush with the surface of a rough mass of concrete that’s about 15-inches square. A Sacajawea Dollar is mounted in the concrete about two inches south of the disk.
The disk is about 60 feet east of the southeast corner of the gravel parking area at the Overlook, about 33 feet east of a low interpretive sign that is supported by four five-inch be five-inch posts, about 22 feet southwest of the southwest column of a stone and timber picnic shelter, about 14 feet south of the south edge of a concrete sidewalk leading from the parking area to the shelter, and about nine feet northwest of a seven-foot tall stone monument that supports a plaque with information about Camp Fortunate and Sacajawea’s role in obtaining horses from the Shoshoni.
The disk is not in the National Geodetic Survey database as of this writing (it does not have a PID). The disk does not have any other identifying stamping other than the standard design elements of the commemorative series of disks: CORPS OF DISCOVERY II – 200 YEARS TO THE FUTURE – PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP.
To reach from Exit 62 at Dillon, MT, go southwest on Interstate 15 for about 19.3 miles to Exit 44. Exit the interstate and go west and south on the Horse Prairie Highway (State Highway 324) for about 1.1 miles to the Camp Fortunate Recreation Area turnoff, Shoshoni Drive. Turn left and go southeasterly on Shoshoni Drive for about 420 feet to a fork. Take the right fork and go southerly through the recreation area, past a flagpole on the left and a large parking area and restroom on the right, for about 0.27 miles to where the drive turns southwest and uphill. Continue southwest and uphill on the drive for another 0.13 miles to a circular drive and parking area at the top of a hill. From the parking area, walk easterly towards the picnic shelter for about 60 feet and the disk on the right.
Thanks to benchmark hunter “CallawayMT” for providing information about this commemorative disk. “CallawayMT” first “recovered” this disk as a no-PID on the Geocaching datasheet for station T, PID = QY0106.
