The Metacomet-Monadnock, M-M, Trail is a 114 mile long hiking trail that extends from the Massachusetts/Connecticut border in Agawam, MA and to the top of Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire. This 4.5 mile section of the M-M Trail starts at Rt. 57 in Southwick, climbs to the top of Provin Mountain then descends to the Westfield River.

Parking is in a cutout on the north side of Rt. 57 west of the trailhead. The M-M trail passes through the gate of the Lane Quarry (hikers have permission to use the trail) at Quarry Road. You soon travel beneath the towering cliffs of the quarry. About 50 meters beyond the cliffs the trail turns east and climbs obliquely to the ridge of the mountain. The trail junction is well marked but also indistinct. From here the trail follows the Provin Mountain Ridge to the Westfield River.

The river is broad and you can see the next white blaze on the north bank of the river. However, it it is unsafe to wade across the river, the nearest bridge is about 5 km (west along 187) in Westfield, MA.
