When this bridge was originally built in 1909, it served as a means for the mules towing the barges along the Erie Canal to cross over Ellicott Creek. When those days ended, it was opened to automobile traffic for a short time. Today it is a valuable part of the Erie Canal Gateway Harbor project. It is used as a pedestrian walkway from Gateway Harbor to the historic Long Homestead and Long Point Park.
