The theater was constructed in 1884 as the First Congregational Church, the building was designed in a Romanesque Revival style by architect Lewis Frederick Rice. It passed through many different church congregations and then remained vacant for many years. Starting in 1989 the building underwent a $3.5 million renovation and conversion into a 467-seat theater in 1992. Grandel Theatre is the official home of the St. Louis Black Repertory Company and performance venue for several other mid-sized arts companies including St. Louis Shakespeare and Off-Ramp produced by The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.
