The theater was constructed in 1884 as the First Congregational Church, the
building was designed in a Romanesque Revival style by architect Lewis Frederick
Rice. It passed through many different church congregations and then remained
vacant for many years. Starting in 1989 the building underwent a $3.5 million
renovation and conversion into a 467-seat theater in 1992. Grandel Theatre is
the official home of the
St. Louis Black
Repertory Company and performance venue for several other mid-sized arts
companies including St.
Louis Shakespeare and
Off-Ramp produced by
The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.
