Christ Church was erected in 1840 in memory of Bishop Ryder, according to inscription over porch, the RHS jamb of which carries a 1GL bolt offset right of the cut mark.
"This bench mark was used during the First primary levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 217.8380 feet [66.3970 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Sheffield to Birmingham levelling line. The surveyor's description was No. 142. Bolt in front of Christ Church tower, near jamb of door ; 2.02 ft. above surface"
