The island of La Palma is one of the Canary Islands. The entire island is considered a Biosphere Reserve these days.

After 4 visits to the island of La Palma we still haven't seen every part of it. Each vacation takes us to new places as well as some well known locations. The island offers a wide variety of landscapes and is a recommended destination for nature lovers.
The forest of Los Tiles in the northeastern part of the island of La Palma was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1983. This part of the island consists of Fayal-Brezal woods, that catches much moisture from the trade winds which causes horizontal precipitation. In 2002 the rest of the island was added to the Biosphere Reserve and the reserve was renamed to "La Palma", with the old reserve being the core. It now also contains different landscapes, like the barren volcanoes of the Ruta de los Vulcanes and the Teneguia area (most recent eruption 1971) and dense pine woods at the slopes of the Cumbre Nueva and the Caldera de Taburiente. Due to its height (summit of Roque de los Muchachos at 2.426 m) the island has different vertical and lateral climatic zones with their specific vegetation.
The heart of the island is formed by the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. (

There are several visitor's centers at the island where people can learn about the island. One is located at Los Tiles, the part of the Island that forms the oldest part of the Biosphere Reserve. This is the location of the sign, at the small visitor's center amidst the Fayal-Brezal.
