Paul Robeson, was an African-American athlete, lawyer, singer, actor and civil rights activist. Born in 1898 he attended Rutgers University where he excelled at sports. He graduated from Columbia Law school. He moved to London where he acted the lead role in Othello to critical acclaim. (

This statue is located on a small plaza at the back of the Harriet Tubman Park in the Las Sendas neighborhood of Mesa, Arizona. The Statue is bronze and is mounted on a brick and field stone base. On the wall behind the statue are two bas relief plaques, each approximately 6 feet tall. The one on the left recognizes Paul's education, artistic achievement and his struggle for labor rights. The piece on the right highlights his sports achievements.
The artist was Rafael Zamarripa, Guadalajara - Mexico. It was sculpted in 1996.
