From the end of the 15th century until the end of the 16th century it became the most reputable university in Spain. In consequence many students from all of Europe and even Latin America came to Salamanca. Around the year 1580 more than 6500 students were enrolled. The organzisational model of this University was used as a prototyp for the universities in Latin America.
In the 19th century reforms led to a decline of the University and Madrid became Spain's leading university. After the end of the Franco regime the influence of this University increased and the number of Students rose notable.
