1883 - Standard time zones are created by railroads in the U.S. and Canada.
1893 - Lizzie Borden is acquitted of giving her parents any number of whacks with an axe.
1903 - The infant motion picture industry stands up and begins to walk with the release of "The Great Train Robbery."
1913 - The first highway across the United States, the Lincoln Highway, is dedicated.
1923 - The Ku Klux Klan in the United States defies a law requiring publication of its members. They had no concept of a group in 2015 having different ideas about that.
1933 - Another war on drugs, called "Prohibition", ends with the ratification of the 25th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
1943 - Norman Rockwell's illustration of "Rosie the Riveter" first appears on the cover of "The Saturday Evening Post."
1953 - Josef Stalin dies before he has the opportunity to launch one last purge.
1963 - The Coca Cola Company introduces its first diet cola, Tab. Marty McFly will have no luck getting one in 1955.
1973 - Richard Nixon says "I am not a crook."
1983 - Pope John Paul II forgives his would-be assassin, Mehmet Ali Agca.
