The Doughboy was formerly in a park in downtown Newark, but now stands between two other memorial sculptures at the VFW Post which appear to depict Civil War Army and Navy figures. Additionally, an eternal flame can be seen in the left foreground.
The engraving on the stone at the Doughboy’s feet reads:
ERECTED BY NEWARK POST 1060
VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF U. S.
DEDICATED TO THOSE COMRADES OF
LICKING COUNTY
WHO OFFERED THEIR LIVES IN HUMANITY’S
DEFENSE WHERER [sic] THEIR CROSS MAY BE
COMRADES IN THE SILENT LAND,
IN DEATH WE SALUTE YOU
DEDICATED JUNE 22, 1929
