His name and title are emblazoned in black on the front of the base.

John Sanfield Macdonald was born in Glengarry County, Upper Canada, in December 1812. He was the first Prime Minister (Premier) of the new Province of Ontario after Confederation in 1867. He also served as Attorney General simultaneously from 1867 until 1871.

Macdonald died 1 June, 1872.
