The centerpiece of Old Rip Plaza, this large metal sculpture by Joe Barrington is a fun and funky tribute to Eastland's most famous resident.
Of course there's a virtual cache here :)
The story of Old Rip is widely known in Texas, although it may have faded from the collective memory of those in the United States who, in 1928, were amazed by the story of an ordinary Texas horned toad who'd spent 30 years walled up in the cornerstone, yet, when freed, was still alive.
This is the largest of many Old Rip tributes around town. You can see his embalmed body in a little casket over at the Eastland County courthouse. You can come to Eastland to celebrate Old Rip Day, celebrated each February on the anniversary of his removal from the courthouse cornerstone. Or, in September, bring the family out to the Old Rip Days festival.
