The Great Stone Inn is named after a large stone deposited in the area some 10,000 years ago during the Ice Age. Until the 1950s the stane was placed outside the inn and functioned as a mounting block for horse rideing customers. The stone was moved into the adjacent Village Pound (see waymark WMPRNJ) in the interests of road safety.
