The ends of the bench are supported by cast iron horses.
"They celebrate the role of working horses on the canals before steam power and diesel engines.
After a nationwide competition was held and judged by a panel of local representatives and canal experts, Lucy Casson was chosen. Her work is based on ‘observations of people and animals; their gestures and moods; scenarios and narratives'".
The above is an extract from this
Hargreave Foundry web site
which gives more details of making and installing the bench. It also has a link to a time lapse video of the bench showing how many people used the bench in one day of its life.
There is a plaque cast into each of the horses' sides.
