The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is known as Shaw's swing bridge and used to carry Shop Lane over the canal. These days road traffic has been blocked from the bridge and restricted to pedestrians and cyclists.

This manual steel bridge replaced an earlier timber bridge from 1820. link

The bridge has a board with the following operating instructions.
