[DE]Der Kettensteg ist die älteste frei schwebende Hängebrücke Deutschlands und die älteste erhaltene Hängebrücke Kontinentaleuropas überhaupt.
Sie wurde 1824 nach Entwürfen des Nürnberger Mechanikers Conrad Georg Kuppler gebaut.
2010 wurde sie grundlegend saniert und
2012 wurde sie mit dem Bayerischen Denkmalpflegepreis in Gold ausgezeichnet.

Nach einer Bauzeit von nur vier Monaten wurde am 30. Dezember 1824 als Ersatz für einen hölzernen Trockensteg die erste freischwebende Flussbrücke Deutschlands eingeweiht.
Die Baukosten betrugen 3620 Gulden, 3,65 Tonnen Schmiedeeisen wurden verbaut. Entworfen und konstruiert wurde das Brückenbauwerk von Ingenieur Conrad Georg Kuppler, der auch an der Entstehung der ersten deutschen Eisenbahn zwischen Nürnberg und Fürth beteiligt war.
Der Kettensteg war die erste eiserne Hängebrücke auf dem europäischen Festland. Der zunächst namenlose Übergang erhielt seine Bezeichnung aus dem Volksmund und rührt von den zahlreichen, jeweils drei Meter langen Kettengliedern, an denen die Brücke aufgehängt ist her. Sie sind an drei, fünf Meter hohen Pylonen befestigt und in massiven Widerlagern an beiden Uferseiten verankert.
Diese Bauteile sind heute noch weitgehend original erhalten. Die ursprünglich aus Eichenholz gefertigten Pylone wurden allerdings, nach schweren Beschädigungen durch Hochwasser 1909 durch die heute noch vorhandene Konstruktion aus Stahlfachwerk ersetzt.

After a construction period of only four months, the first free-floating river bridge in Germany was opened for the public on December 30th, 1824. It replaced a wooden dry dock.
The construction costs amounted to 3620 Gulden, 3.65 tons of wrought iron were used. The bridge structure was designed and constructed by engineer Conrad Georg Kuppler who was also involved in the creation of the first German railway between Nuremberg and Fürth.
The Kettensteg was the first iron suspension bridge in continental Europe. The previously unnamed transition received its name from the vernacular and is due to the numerous, each three meters long chain links, where the bridge is suspended on. They are attached to three, five-meter-high pylons and anchored in massive abutments on both banks.
These components are still largely original today. Originally made of oak pylons they were, however, after being seriously damaged by flooding in 1909, replaced by the still existing structure of steel truss.
