The Masonic Temple, also know as the Great Western Building, was built in 1919 in the Second Empire Style of architecture. This diamond in the rough sits on Yakima Avenue in the historic downtown area of Yakima, Washington.
Sadly, it is a victim of the depressed economy of the city. It sits vacant, and has often been a target for demolition as newer buildings push for more space. For example, in 1999 the Yakima Mall wanted to tear the Temple down to make room for an expansion.
This city is teaming with historically significant architecture and I believe that with some effort at polishing up those old gems, new life would be breathed into the community.
