The original photo was taken in 1903 and published in 1905 in as Plate 17-B in USGS Bulletin 252, Preliminary Report on the Geology and Water Resources of Central Oregon, by Israel C. Russell with the caption “Crater No. 5 Mount Newberry, massive extrusion of lava, forming crags: looking northeast. Crook County, Oregon. 1903”.
The photo is available from the USGS Denver Library Photographic Collection (http://library.usgs.gov/photo/#/) and is numbered ric00828.
The main change is that trees visible in the original photo have grown up partially blocking the view.
Today Crater No. 5 is known as the vent the Big Obsidian Flow at Newberry Volcano. Also the location is now in Deschutes County which was created in 1916 from part of Crook County.
There is a higher (100’) rock point just to the southeast (N 43° 41.076’ W 121° 14.006’) with a better view today and I’ve also included photos from there.
There is no easy trail access to either of these locations.
Year photo was taken: 1903
