The majority of the business section of Didsbury consists of brick buildings, and for a very good reason - FIRE! In 1914 the original building on this site was lost to the New Year's Day 1914 fire.

Smith's Department Store
The original building, Smith's Department Store, stood on this site from around 1903 to 1914 when it was replaced with the present building. In the early 1900s, rural communities like Didsbury relied on establishments like Smith's as sources of essential supplies. More than this, local businesses provided a vital link between local residents and the outside world and helped nurture a sense of community. Despite the presence of the Canadian Pacific Railway, prairie towns were very isolated, especially during the long harsh winters. The building was home to the American Cafe in the 1930s and to the Red and White Grocery from 1947 until about 1973. Berscht's Clothing store was located here in the 1970s and, renamed as Freeman's Mens and Boys Wear, operated here until the late 1990s.
