Klenutý jednolodní kostel s pristavenou ctyrbokou veží na jižní strane stojí uprostred mestecka. Románské základy presbytáre dokazují, že puvodní kostel byl vystaven již ve 12.-13. století.
O dalším osudu kostela po dobu takrka 500 let nic nevíme, nekolikrát je v historických dokumentech zminována pouze fara v Ostrovacicích, o kostele se nikdy nepíše. Je tedy pravdepodobné, že behem této doby byl prestavován, ne-li vystaven úplne znovu na puvodním míste.
První zmínka o oprave a rekonstrukci kostela pochází ze 17. století, tedy z období raného baroka (1693), v roce 1699 byla zvýšena vež a pokryta plechem (v té dobe mela cibulovitou podobu s cerveným náterem).V letech 1718-1719 došlo k prodloužení puvodního kostela a byla pristavena kaple s oltárem sv. Barbory.
V roce 1803 byla pristavena chrámová predsín v klasicistním stylu a nákladem kláštera byly porízeny vežní hodiny.
V roce 1880 byla na severní strane kostela pristavena nová sakristie a puvodní (ve veži) zacala být využívána jako Boží hrob (v roce 1914 jej porídil farár Benno Schafra). a pozdeji i zpovednice.
K další opravám kostela došlo v letech 1892, 1905 a 1930. V roce 1963 byla do kostela porízena nová okna, kostel byl vymalován a v roce 1964 byly zrestaurovány také nástropní fresky v kapli sv. Barbory. V roce 1970 bylo v kostele zavedeno vytápení infrazárici, které bylo v roce 1984 nahrazeno topením plynovým. V roce 1974 probehla úprava presbytáre pro sloužení mší tvárí k lidu a na zem byla položena mramorová dlažba z vratcanského vápence. V léte roku 1976 byla svépomocí opravena fasáda kostela, v roce 1977 byla mramorová dlažba položena v celém kostela a v roce 1978 byly zhotoveny nové lavice. Významnou událostí roku 1989 bylo porízení nových elektrofonických varhan a vybudování nového kuru.
V roce 1993 byly zahájeny práce na generální oprave kostela a fary – nejdríve byla na kostele opravena strecha, byly osazeny nové medené žlaby a svody a byla provedena ochrana drevené konstrukce kroku kostela. V roce 1994 bylo provedeno stažení klenby kostela, protože stavba vykazovala cetné trhliny. Poté následovala oprava fasády a její náter. Pri opravách bylo zjišteno, že je treba porídit také vežní okna a nové okno bylo porízeno také do sakristie. V roce 2001 bude provedena generální oprava elektriny a oprava interiéru kostela vcetne jeho vymalování.
