This the real deal on dry land. It is the mast from the USS South Dakota. The USS South Dakota Launched June 7 1941. Commissioned March 20 1942. Decommissioned January 31 1947. In 1962 it was salvaged. Since it was impossible to bring the ship back to South Dakota Some of the parts were shipped to Sioux Falls displayed the same foot print as the hull in Sherman Park. The 16" gun shells weighed as much as a Volkswagon Beetle. There is an indoor display also. This ship recieved 13 Battle Stars! The ship was know as "Battleship X" after an encounter the Japanese thought they sunk her because of all the fire and smoke from South Dakota's guns.
