The Zoo Osnabrück is to be found in the south of Osnabrück in the district Schölerberg adjacent to the hill with the same name. 1935 it was founded as „Heimattiergarten“ and opened in summer 1936. On 23.5 hectar nearly 3700 animals of about 300 different species live there.
The zoo has a focus on Africa. In three Africa themed areas ("Tal der grauen Riesen" ("Grey Giant's Valley"), Samburu, Takamanda) there live animals from this continent. Besides the Africa themed areas there is an aquarium, the south america house and the underground zoo with naked mole rats and prairie dogs.
The zoo is situated in a beech grove. For the african savanna area named Takamanda the zoo ground was expanded in 2010.
In 2010 865.000 visitors were counted. 2011 1.030.000 visitors came. In a poll from "Service Value GmbH" in 2012 in wich visitor were asked to rate the service in 20 German zoos Osnabrück scored the first place.
