[FR] Leur création a été décidée par le conseil de la communauté urbaine Nantes Métropole en 2004 ; elles ont été inaugurées en 2007 et sont gérées par la société publique locale « Le Voyage à Nantes » par délégation de service public de Nantes Métropole.
Les Machines de l'île sont situées à la croisée des « mondes inventés » de Jules Verne, de l’univers mécanique de Léonard de Vinci et de l’histoire industrielle de Nantes. En octobre 2007, à Paris, le Salon international du tourisme lui a décerné son prix spécial du jury, qui récompense un équipement touristique innovant.
Les Machines de l'île comprennent le Grand Éléphant, l’Arbre aux Hérons, le Carrousel des Mondes Marins ainsi qu'un manège pour enfants : le manège d'Andréa.
[EN] Located in the warehouses of the former shipyards in Nantes it visualizes a travel-through-time world taking inspiration from the "imaginary worlds" of Jules Verne and the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci.
The site was opened to the public on July 1, 2007 and as of 2015 includes 3 projects and attractions.

The machine gallery is an exhibition place to illustrate the background story of the machines. Some visitors could be invited to control marine animals or the European Flight Test Center, etc.
