En 1912, le système de la Commission scolaire de Montréal a décidé de construire la Montreal High School à son emplacement actuel pour remplacer le bâtiment surpeuplé précédent de la rue Peel. L'ancien bâtiment avait été érigé par le Conseil protestant de commissaires d'école et avait non seulement logé les bureaux de la société, mais aussi deux écoles secondaires existant dans le même temps: la High School of Montreal, fondée en 1843 pour éduquer les garçons, et le lycée des filles, établi indépendamment en 1875. La fonction de l'école secondaire de Montréal est bien reflétée dans l'arrangement des plans des planchers. Composé de quatre étages, chaque étage est organisé en une division axiale stricte: le principal, le personnel et les parties communes dans le bloc du milieu; garçons dans l'aile nord; et les filles dans l'aile sud. Chaque aile avait son entrée distincte pour le genre.

In 1912, the Montreal School board’s system decided to build the
Montreal High School at its present location to replace the previous overcrowded building on Peel Street. The earlier building was first erected by the Protestant Board of School Commissioners and had not only accommodated the board’s offices, but also two existing high schools at the same time: the High School of Montreal, founded in 1843 to educate boys, and the High School of Girls, established independently in 1875. The function of the Montreal High School is best reflected in the space arrangement of the floor plans. Composed of four storeys, each floor is organized in a strict axial division: the principal, staff and common areas in the middle block; boys in the North Wing; and girls in the South Wing. Each wing had it's gender separated entrance.
