A 5.75' high by 1' square marble figure of a union soldier stands atop a 26' high granite base with a circular shaft and 6.5' square stepped base. The monument is patterned after Hadrian's Column in Rome, Italy. The figure is that of a Union standard bearer. He stands upright looking slightly over his right shoulder. He is wearing a cap, knee-length coat and a cape while his right arm is wrapped around an upright flag. He holds a sheathed sword downward in his left hand.
