An extension of the K.C. Irving Building, the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre's Herbarium is a part of the research centre for the
Earth and Environmental Science Department. It houses several greenhouses, each with unique interior climates tailored to the flora housed within.
Housed in the herbarium is the Irving Biodiversity Collection, the largest herbarium in Eastern North America and a living collection of over 600 species of plants of the Acadian Forest Region.
We were able to visit Acadia University and this herbarium while passing through Wolfville and found it to be a very edifying and enjoyable sojourn. One of the researchers was working in the greenhouses at the time and was pleased to show us through the herbarium and describe the plants we found interesting, all the while offering a running commentary as we moved through the premises.
Especially interesting were the carnivorous plants under cultivation at the centre. Though they have a number of carnivorous plants in their care, there were only a handful in a location accessible to the public. These were a few of the younger and smaller plants, just learning their trade of ridding the labs of pesky flying insects which should happen to come too close. Floral fanatics should love this place.
