During the Second World War, as part of Australia's contribution to the defence of New Caledonia, an Australian coastal artillery unit called 'Robin Force', commanded by Charles Harris Arnell Carty-Salmon, spent seven months on Ouen-Toro to instal and operate two 6" guns and to train the local personnel.
