The memorial has 13, 5.5m high, classical styled columns, each representing one of Australia’s major conflicts-to-date. The columns are arranged in a 30 metre diameter circle, the footing of a missing 14th column paying tribute to the ‘unknown soldier’,in the middle is a granite boulder in the shape of a teardrop with a plaque on either side. There are plaques at the base of the first four columns to the three services with the fourth dedicated to the Merchant Navy.
The memorial was moved to it's present location in 2005 from the eastern side of Flinders Lane and was official opened on 13 August, 2005 to coincide with the 60th anniversary of VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day.
The entrance to the circle of pillars is guarded by two bronze soldiers, by noted Perth sculptor Andrew Kay, and posed with guns reversed in remembrance of those who fought for their country.
