As with a lot of smaller communities, Waubay is slowly losing population. Its census in 2010 was 576. compared with the 2000 census of 662.
Waubay is in the center of great hunting, fishing, and water recreation areas.
Just to the north of town is Blue Dog Lake, well known for its fishing and boating fun.
To the west is Rush Lake and to the south is Bitter Lake.
