St Philip is the oldest Catholic Church in Williamson County. A need for a Catholic church in Franklin was identified as early as 1847, when the Bishop earmarked the present site for the church with money granted by the Franklin Female Academy.
The original church was finally completed in 1871. The first baptism took place in 1872. Saint Philip gained Parish status in 1898.
The depression years were harsh for the church. Congregation levels decreased so much that the church was reduced to Mission status again. However, following the end of World War II, the church again attained Parish status in 1946.
The size of the old church became a concern as more members joined the parish. An old farmhouse next to the church was purchased and turned into a Parish Center. Finally, a new church was added to the original in 1985.
The Church is very active within the local community. Masses are held in both English and Spanish to serve the needs of the Parish.
