Inside the protected natural area "Duursche Waarden" lie the impressive remains of an old brick factory. In these remains the flame oven, the ring oven and the chimney can clearly be recognised. In the fall of 2003 this site was designated as a national monument. In 2006 the chimney was restored. The factory was in operation from 1828 to 1976. Hendrik Jan Bakhuis (Veessen) acquired the factory in 1908 and was the owner until 1925. The Bakhuis family was a well known name in the meat and brick industry. For the workers of the factory a pedestrian only ferry was commissioned between Fortmond and Veessen. Around 1930 the factory got a flame oven and cam into the hands of A. Zanen (Heerde). At the time of closure the brick factory was still producing over 14 million bricks with 25 workers.
