Mack Cemetery is located behind the new Town Hall, a former elementary school, along the Skyline Trail in the small rural town of Middlefield in western Massachusetts. A mysterious gravestone is located in the back row, apart from all the other grave markers. The rough cut, homemade, grave marker is about 3' high and bears the cryptic inscription IT.
Theories about this grave abound. The most benign theory is that the letters were carved onto the stone merely as a malicious prank. Others think it's the grave of a drifter that died while working as a farmhand in Middlefield, a cripple, or a newborn baby of unknown gender. In effect, no one really knows the true story behind this unusual grave marker.
