This 29' foot high stainless steel sculpture was created by George Warren Rickey. A pair of large L's are placed in mirror image orientation. The L's are supported on tall base with a Y shaped pivot. Based on the concept that Rickey developed, conical sections can be placed in such a way that they do not intersect. The sculpture’s motion on the pivot is restricted to within these conical sections and therefore the large L’s will rotate back and forth in the wind but will never hit each other.
Double L Excentric Gyratory II was a gift of the Class of 1961 on the occasion of their 50th Reunion. It was installed on the campus in 2011 and "dedicated in the belief that public art enhances the beauty of the Williams campus, accentuates learning, and stimulates creativity."
