Hector Macdonald was the son of a crofter and began his military career as a private in the British army, and later became a Major General. He dstinguished himself during the Boer War when he saved the British army from total destruction at the Battle of Omdurman.
Sir Hector MacDonald KCB, DSO committed suicide in a Paris hotel in 1903
The memorial was erected on the instigaton of the Caledonian Society.
An attatched plaque is inscribed with the words :-
Water fountain in memory of "Fighting Mac"
Major General Sir Hector McDonald
Commissioned by the Caledonian Society for
the sum of L80 in 1907. Plans and specifications
were provided by Stead Bros, Fremantle
2014 Restoration
