Located in Moundsville, West Virginia, (Just 15 minutes south of Wheeling, WV), is the Grave Creek Mound. Or as the locals call it, “The Mound.”
The Mound was built some 2000 years ago by a people known as the Adena. Built over a span of 100 years or more, this is the largest of the Adena burial mounds. And as I found out from the below website they built it without using the wheel and also without the help of beasts of burden like horses, etc.
Next to the Mound is a small local museum that has a nice display area telling what little is known of the Adena people.
And for those inclined, there is a trail that winds around The Mound leading to the top.
In my opinion this is a nice example of local and state governments coming together to help preserve our local histories.
