Built as a social and civic center, George Draper gave up his house on this site to build it. The purpose was to be a social and civic center for all of Hopedale residents and Draper Corporation employees from other towns. The building was to included a gym, bowling alley, billard room, smoking and a card room. The west end held the ladies room. Boston architect Edwin J Lewis provided the design, with Casper Ranger Construction Co. from Holyoke MA built the project.
